The 90/90 rule to organize and clean your closet and at home

Having a small closet does not always have to be a problem when it comes to keeping our clothes, shoes and accessories well organized. Good organization, following an effective method and following a series of guidelines is the best way to keep chaos away from our closets, dressers and other storage spaces that we have at home.

Having a 5 square meter dressing room full of shelves, drawers, mezzanines, bars and hangers of all sizes and shapes is a dream for many, but it does not always have to be synonymous with order and harmony.

You can have little space but have it well organized without having to do without our basic clothes, those that we like the most, fit us best and with which we are most comfortable in our daily lives. Because as the German-American architect Mies Van der Rohe said on most occasions, less is more.

There are very minimalist people, in clothing and in other facets of their life, but you may also find yourself among those who do not wear even a tenth of the clothes they have. There may even be clothes in your closet that you don’t even remember.

That is the basis of the 90/90 method, which gives prominence to minimalism and can be applied to any material aspect of life. It is as good for organizing our closets as it is for any other part of the house or office. It is not easy to stop accumulating things in the age of consumerism, but it can be very practical and help you declutter any room in a very short time.

Three months trial

Its reason for being is very simple and makes a lot of sense: all those clothes that you have not worn in the previous 90 days and are not going to wear in the following 90 days – three months before and three months after – are very likely to be left over. your closet and never wear them again. There are some exceptions for very seasonal garments, so in some cases this period can be extended to between four and six months.

But if you don’t see yourself wearing that ruffled shirt that you don’t even remember when you bought in that period of time or wearing that skirt from three seasons ago again, don’t hesitate and get rid of them now without thinking about it; The only thing they are doing in your closet is taking up space and preventing you from seeing at once everything you have and that you do want to wear.

That is why it is so important from time to time to review all the clothes, footwear and accessories that we accumulate in the closet. A good time is at the change of season, although it can be done more frequently. We can take the opportunity to take out all the clothes, do a thorough cleaning of the shelves and drawers and a couple of piles with the clothes that we do continue to use and those that have become old and deteriorated or to which we simply no longer pay as much attention and to which We can give way to gain space and give it a new opportunity.

The technique was devised by Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, creators of the podcast The Minimalists and also stars of the Netflix documentary titled Minimalism: Less is Now (2021). As they point out on their blog, “rules can be arbitrary, restrictive and boring, but they are often useful when we hope to achieve change.”

Create a good wardrobe

Continuing with the numerical methods, another that is relevant is the 3-3-3 to create a wardrobe and that also goes along the minimalist and practical line of 90/90. This method means that with three different types of footwear, three bottoms and three tops, we could create a very basic wardrobe but at the same time very easily combinable with other pieces and accessories. By combining only these garments we could achieve up to 15 different ‘looks’.

To do this, it is best to use plain garments in basic colors – black, white or gray and brown tones – which are more easily combinable with each other and with other printed fabrics. To create our wardrobe we will also choose some more informal clothes and others that can help us to be more dressed up. With this method, as with the 90/90 method, we will also save space and time.

How to organize the closet

With these tips we will make it easier to always have our closet organized, everything in sight and available to be able to use it whenever we want. Even so, we give you another series of recommendations to finish organizing everything perfectly:

  • As we have said before, it is very useful to take out from time to time – at least at the change of season – everything that we accumulate in the closet or dressers in the bedroom. This way we see everything we have, and we can better select those clothes that are still in good condition and that we are going to continue wearing and discard those that are damaged or we want to donate.
  • At the same time, we are going to take the opportunity to do a good cleaning of the closet, removing all the dust, eliminating possible moisture and any dirt that may have formed inside. A cloth moistened with soap and water is very useful.
  • Especially if you have little space, it may be a good idea to make a mental – or even physical – plan of how you want to organize your clothes, by type of garment, colors, etc., how you are going to organize the accessories if you also keep them in the wardrobe…
  • And another tip that we give you is that you get different storage formats that may be useful to you, such as hangers to organize handkerchiefs and scarves or ties, boxes for shoes or underwear, or different types of baskets, because they will help you organize everything better. that you have to save.
