He Barcelona He dreams of signing Nico Williams, but it is becoming increasingly clear that he will not succeed.
Williams’ bond with Athletic Club remains very strong, and it is difficult to deny him a stay at his boyhood club if that is his final decision.
Throughout the summer, Barca president Joan Laporta has maintained that the club has the financial means to acquire Williams for his €60m release clause. Dani Olmo will cost Barcelona a similar amount if a deal is reached with RB Leipzig, and it is not yet clear whether that will come out of Williams’ budget.
But let’s assume that’s not the case, and that the Blaugrana have 60 million euros to sign a winger to partner young sensation Lamine Yamal. Who should they target?
We have five suggestions for them…
Although Erik ten Hag has welcomed Jadon Sancho, Manchester United could still sell the winger before the transfer window closes.
For one reason or another, Sancho hasn’t worked out in his native England, and while he struggled to get going in the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, his Champions League form proved he’s still a half-decent winger on the continent.
Sancho has already been timidly linked with Barcelona in this window, but not too much since Williams became their main target.
Bayern Munich are looking to the future: Michael Olise has signed for Crystal Palace and talks are underway for Rennes’ Desire Doue.
A veteran like Kingsley Coman must be wondering what will happen next at the club. Will he be trusted to play under new manager Vincent Kompany? Will he be given another chance ahead of the stars of tomorrow?
90min revealed earlier this summer that Bayern would be willing to sell Coman
for €50m, with Barcelona among the clubs monitoring his situation. If Williams doesn’t come to fruition, it’s hard to imagine them not exploring the possibility again.
If Barcelona want a younger alternative to Coman, then 19-year-old striker Mathys Tel is probably worth pursuing.
Barça could also offer a great playing field. The old ‘Barça DNA’ has been sown in the Catalan press, questioning his importance for Bayern’s project with his French teammates Olise and Doue running the wings.
Bayern tried to end speculation about Tel’s future by tying him down to a new contract in March. But, as we have learned in football, that matters little if the player is determined to leave.
A Barcelona classic.
Juventus have made it abundantly clear that Federico Chiesa can leave this summer, with reports in Italy claiming they would be willing to accept offers as low as €20m.
It’s true that the 26-year-old’s fitness record is shocking, and throwing him into Barcelona’s injury-damned luck machine is unlikely to improve his fortunes. But if the Blaugrana are really desperate, he’s worth betting on at that price, isn’t he?
The other four players on this list have in common that they are all right-handed, so Pedro Neto is here in part to cleanse the palate a bit.
Able to play anywhere up front and with international experience, Neto would fit into Barcelona’s renowned style and provide the width they crave.
Neto recently stated that he was happy at Wolves, but the Barcelona touch is different to that of the Old Gold.
