It feels like it was yesterday when our Super Nintendos just wouldn’t turn off, because for some reason, Shigeru Miyamoto and company had decided to put Mario on top of a Go Kart to create one of the most fun games of all time. 30 years have passed since that event that would give life to one of the company’s most successful series, one that, even commercially, would surpass the main games of the famous plumber. Now that we are just on long tablecloths celebrating the three decades of existence of Mario Kartwe have decided to present you the ones that for us, are the five most outstanding titles of the franchise. Needless to say, the choice was truly complicated.
Super Mario Kart
By the early nineties when Nintendo was launching its SNES, Mario was already one of the most recognized characters not only in the medium, but also in popular culture. For this reason, those from Kyoto knew that they should take him to more things besides his flagship platform games. In this way, after doing a couple of tests, it was determined that the best option that could be taken was to put him on a Go Kart so that he could compete with his friends throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. The result is history because in a very short time, Super Mario Kart became a basic of the 16-bit console and of course, a classic that to this day is a great idea whenever you want to have a drink to have a great time now. either alone or in the company of someone else.
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
The Nintendo 64 era was complicated and even weird for almost all of the company’s first party series. Although Mario Kart 64 is greatly loved for all the hours of fun it gave us, we have to accept that things like its track design and general technical performance were far from ideal. Knowing full well this, the team behind the series knew that for the powerful new Game Cube, new things had to be tried. That’s how Mario Kart: Double Dash!! was born, which allowed you to have two characters on the same vehicle to show off new mechanics that undoubtedly felt fresh and full of life. Despite the above, it is important to note that the real star of the game was its tracks, things like DK Mountain continue to resonate in every way, plus of course, we finally had a Mario Kart that ran decently.
mario kart ds
The relationship between laptops and Mario Kart took a lot longer than it probably should have. It wasn’t until 2001 on the Game Boy Advance that the Mushroom Kingdom races were finally available to go with the fantastic Mario Kart Super Circuit. Although we would have loved to put this title on our list, we have to accept that its successor surpassed it in everything. Mario Kart DS is one of those generational gems that will always be difficult to replicate. In addition to having a sensational selection of tracks and running at 60 frames per second, it offered us the ability to play on the internet. Yes, you challenge at any time of the day with real humans. The best thing is that the service worked perfectly and was even one of the first approaches to online gaming for many.
mario kart 7
By the second decade of the current century, it seemed that Nintendo had more than mastered the Mario Kart formula and that there really wasn’t much room for growth. The great results of Mario Kart DS and then Mario Kart Wii left us wondering what could make the next installment in the series better. Well, the answer would come with Mario Kart 7 on the Nintendo 3DS, a game that, in addition to continuing to look spectacular, came to establish a new standard in terms of controls and modern track design. Things like the introduction of the glider or being able to go underwater were excellent, but we think that in the end, the practicality of taking out the laptop and in a few seconds you were already competing with your friends, made it a favorite of many.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The time of the Wii U was one of the most complicated for Nintendo; However, we have to remember that despite the fact that the console never took off commercially, very important efforts were made at the first party level. An example of the above is Mario Kart 8, a title that was released in 2014 to basically completely break the genre, thanks to the enormous quality standard that it imposed and that basically nobody has been able to replicate. Here we are talking about a basically perfect game which, a few years later, was re-released on the Switch as Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, including the fabulous previously released DLC and better technical features. To date, Nintendo continues to add content to it, which indicates that a possible Mario Kart 9 is not even on the horizon.
