When Chelsea’s new owners came in, they hatched a four-window transfer plan that has now entered its final stretch.
The Blues’ project has not gone exactly to plan so far and the focus has now turned to creating a squad suitable for new manager Enzo Maresca, who arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer with a tactical set-up that may require some targeted investment this summer.
With that in mind, here are three players Chelsea need to sign before this transfer window closes.
Victor Osimhen has been Chelsea’s most sought-after striker for years. The 25-year-old is one of the few elite forwards who look genuinely attainable and would clearly help the Blues address perhaps their biggest flaw in recent years: putting the ball in the back of the net.
Chelsea have turned their attention to other targets amid concerns over Osimhen’s high wages and £100m-plus release clause, but Napoli’s determination to replace the Nigerian with Romelu Lukaku surely has to work in Chelsea’s favour.
This deal shouldn’t be done at any price, but Chelsea have the financial resources to spend big money if necessary. A little more flexibility from all involved should allow the Blues a substantial upgrade in attack.
Harry Kane’s presence at Bayern Munich saw Mathys Tel move from striker to winger last season, but the 19-year-old Frenchman did not disappoint. Despite starting just six Bundesliga games, Tel ended up scoring seven goals and providing five assists.
Tel could be more valuable to Chelsea as a winger than a striker. The Blues want more reinforcements on the wing amid concerns about the goalscoring output of players in their current squad, and they could do a lot worse than signing one of the best young strikers on the planet.
The problem here is that Tel is under contract until 2029. He may have to put pressure on his current employers, perhaps citing his lack of minutes, to get him through.
Chelsea’s determination to snap up the best young players in the game is almost meant to be played in jest, but their interest in Gremio’s 16-year-old midfielder Gabriel Mec must be taken incredibly seriously.
Already compared to fellow Gremio product Ronaldinho, Mec is widely regarded as one of the best players in his class in world football and scouting reports on the teenager agree that seeing him develop into something more than a superstar would be a huge surprise.
Mec can’t even move to Europe until the summer of 2026, so it’s clearly not a move for the present, but his talents shouldn’t be ignored by clubs who have the finances to pull off a deal.
