The 2024 Geneva Salon was such a huge disappointment

The figures don't lie, the Geneva Motor Show in 2024 turned out to be a real disappointment.

You just barely heard any crickets, but it was not very busy at the Geneva auto show this year. The undersigned was present on behalf of Autoblog to report on the poor news. Compared to previous editions it was really very quiet.

During previous editions, we and the editors stood in front of a busy entrance at 7:30 AM to go inside. This edition I traveled to Switzerland on my own and walked leisurely to the entrance at 8:00 am. No lines, no crowds, nothing.

It wasn't until mid-morning when the press conferences were organized that you saw some people arriving on the press day. The most important news was the debut of the Renault 5. In the following days, the car show opened to visitors.

We were asked on social media whether it was worth traveling to Geneva for the car show. I would answer with a clear no. Great for us to present you with live pics of some new cars. But as a consumer it is far too boring to make the journey. Just believe me… Unfortunately peanut butter, because the Geneva salon has a rich history with beautiful world premieres over the years. There is little left of that glitz and glamor.

The figures are now in and you can't speak of a successful edition. The organization does that, but it is actually shameful. The Geneva Salon 2024 was good for 168,000 visitors in a period of seven days. For comparison, more than 600,000 (!) visitors were registered at the last edition in 2019. The organization actually hoped to reach 200,000 visitors this year, but that did not happen.

There were 23 world and European firsts on the exhibition floor, with 37 operators, including 19 manufacturers. Disappointment or not: the 91st edition of the Geneva Motor Show is over and the organization will simply try again next year.

From February 17 to 23, 2025, the Palexpo in Geneva will open its doors for a new edition. You would expect that they would pull the plug after such a disappointing edition, but no. Let's see what they have to offer.
