If 2023 was a magnificent year for video games, 2024 threatens to follow in its footsteps, at least in the first part of the year. There will be time to see if this inertia continues throughout the year, if the season ends up failing, if some surprise rings the bell or if one of the most anticipated games ends in fiasco, the truth is that, today, this first quarter of 2024 that we have just inaugurated has at least four games that are very convenient to keep track of.
Persona 3 Reload (February 2): This game would not be so anticipated if it were not for the phenomenon it was in 2016 Persona 5. But that game, an absolute masterpiece, was a blow to the table in terms of visual style, story, time and calendar management, combat and mixing of the ordinary world (the high school, Japantown) and the unconscious world. (the mental palaces). Persona 3 returns in the form of remake from the 2006 game, yes, but absorbing everything that made it good Persona 5. If things go well, we will be facing a monumental game.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (February 29): If in 2020 we receive the first part of the remake of the very famous Final Fantasy VII (which actually became a reboot due to the twist it made on the original story), now comes the second part: the sequel to a remake-reboot, something rarely seen even in times where these concepts colonize popular culture. If the first part placed us in the content of the first CD of the original game (the city of Midgard), now our group of eco-terrorist heroes go out into the big world. Last year Final Fantasy XVI disappointed fans; Now the saga has a new (last?) opportunity to correct its mistakes and offer a great game.
Alone in the Dark (March 20): Yes, a remake. This time of terror; this time one of the games that established the foundations of a genre that has become one of the favorites of the gamers. It is not for less. In that distant 1992, Alone in the Dark It represented a quantum leap in horror adventures, with a story, setting and gameplay that were difficult to dream of at that time. Horror has borne some of the most precious recent fruits of the entire digital ecosystem, so the bar is high. However, we trust.
Dragon's Dogma 2 (March 22): Another sequel, but we have already said many times that in the world of video games sequels, prequels or remakes do not mean so much (as in cinema or literature) creative laziness as much as refinement of a playable formula. The original dates back to 2012 and, despite being a great game, technical limitations hindered the experience of a gross, heavy and threatening dark fantasy world. Since then Capcom has had indisputable critical and public successes and has become a company that is difficult to fail. A safe bet to be one of the games of the year.
