In an effort to strengthen online safety for younger users, YouTube announced its youth digital welfare initiativea global project that seeks to promote high quality content while limiting exposure to potentially harmful material. The platform, in collaboration with creators and distributors of content in 10 countries, including Mexicowill work on strategies to promote digital citizenship, media literacy and safe learning In children and adolescents.
Neal Mohan, general director of YouTube, stressed: “This initiative seeks to expand access to content that drives learning inside and outside the classroom, while protecting young people from online risks.”
Families face a growing challenge in the digital age: how to ensure that their children navigate online safely without falling into excessively restrictive measures. According to the recent report Rights #Synchonexion Save The Children, presented in 2024, parents are adopting various strategies to protect their children in the digital environment.
The study reveals that 38% of parents choose to explain to their children the existing risks on the Internetadopting an educational approach that seeks to raise awareness about online hazards. 30% set strict limits in connection timetrying to control the exposure to the screens by defined schedules. 25% goes one step furthernot only warning about risks, but actively teaching their children how to act in potentially dangerous situations. Finally, 23% resort to direct monitoringclosely following their children’s activities on social networks and other digital platforms.
However, the report also exposes a worrying reality: Almost half of the families (50%) agreed to use standards with their children, but these measures are not always effective. 37% of minors acknowledge how to skip parental control applications installed on their devices, and 30% admit “effectively”which highlights the limitations of technical tools when they are not accompanied by adequate supervision and family dialogue. These findings underline The need for a balance between the implementation of parental controls and digital educationwhere the accompaniment and constant communication between parents and children become fundamental pillars for a safe and responsible navigation.
