The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) updated the list of footballers with the most appearances so far in the 21st century and Cristiano Ronaldo has now topped the table with a total of 1,204 appearances. Lionel Messi appears in fourth place, with 1,047 matches played in the period from 2001 to 2023 with the shirts from Barcelona, PSG, Inter Miami and the Argentine National Team
Only four players have reached 1,000 games or have surpassed this top mark. On the other hand, 21 players in total have played more than 900 games and 17 of them are active.
As usually happens in the world of statistics, Messi always ends up among the best in the world. Not only is he the winningest player of all time and the top assister in history. He now finished among the five players who played the most games. At 36 years old, he played 778 games for Barcelona, 180 with the National Team, 75 with Paris Saint Germain and, for now, 14 with Inter Miami. Of those matches, 584 were for local tournaments, 104 for National Cups and 179 for International Cups.
