Car manufacturer Tesla is going to fire one in ten employees. This was evident from an internal email on Monday, which was seen by the Reuters news agency. Bloomberg also confirms the report and has read the email sent by CEO Elon Musk. Tesla has been struggling with disappointing sales figures for some time now.
In January, among other things, NRC that Tesla has been overtaken by China's BYD as the global market leader in the sale of electric cars. That car manufacturer sold more cars than Tesla did at the end of 2023. Earlier this month the company attributed the decline in volume to long-term problems with the Model 3 car and production problems due to arson at a Tesla factory near Berlin, among other things. Next Tuesday, Tesla will publish the figures for the first quarter of 2024.
Reuters writes that Tesla had approximately 140,470 employees worldwide at the end of 2023. Of those, ten percent – about 14,000 employees – are expected to be laid off. “As we prepare the company for our next phase of growth, it is important to look at cost savings and increasing productivity,” Musk reportedly wrote in the email, according to Reuters. Before the opening of the American stock exchange, the price fell by about 1.5 percent around two o'clock on Monday afternoon.
