Tesla's global expansion strategy continues to look east. And more precisely to Southeast Asia, a land conquered by BYD in recent years. And it is precisely the rivalry with the Chinese giant that pushes the manufacturer led by Elon Musk to plan the construction of a new Gigafactory in that area: we are talking about the Thailand as the first choice, even if it is not the only one.
New factory in Thailand?
Speaking of Thailand, which is Southeast Asia's largest auto producer and exporter, a government official said earlier this month that Tesla had discussed a potential production facility after reviewing a site late last year. Not surprisingly, there have been rumors about it for some time negotiations ongoing between the country's administration and the leaders of the US brand: possible steps forward are expected in the coming weeks.
Southeast Asia is a priority
While waiting to understand what will happen in Thailand, Tesla is always looking around with reference to South-East Asia. Rohan Patelsenior executive for public policy and business development at Tesla, expounded on the importance of this geographical area for American society: “Southeast Asia will undoubtedly be a important place of growth in the coming years regarding battery storage and the adoption of electric vehicles”. For this reason, Tesla is convinced that its expansion in Southeast Asia should be considered a priority.
There is also Malaysia
We remember that recently the giant led by Elon Musk has made important steps forward Malaysia: the first deliveries of the Model Y have started (the Model 3 is also on the market), and only last year the Malaysian government made it known that Tesla's intention was to complement the local sales network a charging infrastructure for electric vehicles rather widespread.
