Group formed by 15 black workers accuses company managers of prejudiced comments and persecution
In a lawsuit filed against Tesla on Friday (July 1, 2022), 15 former and current black employees accuse the company of harassment and racism by colleagues and executives of the electric car maker.
The lawsuit, filed in a California state court, cites the use of terms such as “slavery” and “plantation” –in reference to forced labor agricultural fields. One of the managers reportedly told an employee: “It is rare for blacks to work here. I don’t know how long you’ll stay”. The information is from the news agency Reuters.
Another employee would have heard that he would not be “like most blacks” per “don’t act like a ghetto”. Your nickname would be “zebra” for not being “neither black nor white”.
Those who filed complaints about the bigoted comments would have been reassigned to more difficult positions and struggled to get promotions. The cases would have happened mainly at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California.
The company is the target of at least 10 other lawsuits of the same content, including sexual harassment and widespread racial discrimination.
Tesla has not commented on the complaint. On his Twitter profile, the executive director Elon Musk also ignored the case and said he was feeling “maybe… kinda bored?”. He didn’t specify what he was referring to.
