An important turning point in the Netherlands during the investigation of an accident between the driver of a Tesla he was using the Autopilot system and another car. The government forensic laboratory has in fact breached the data archive of the American car manufacturer, accessing the system in which the driving data is stored, a system that the Palo Alto brand has always jealously guarded, preventing any external access. The NFI has thus been able to access a much larger amount of data than those normally provided by Tesla, providing investigators with new elements and thus allowing them to know what and how much data is stored by the brand led by Elon Musk.
According to the NFI, the decrypted data shows how Tesla’s cars can store various information about the operation of its driver assistance system, saving speed, accelerator pedal position, steering wheel angle and use of the brake, data that can be stored for over a year. “This data contains a wealth of information for forensic investigators and traffic accident analysts and can help with a criminal investigation after a fatal car accident or accident with injuries.”Francis Hoogendijk, a digital investigator at the NFI, said in a statement. The data decrypted by the NFI revealed a series of information that Tesla had not provided to investigators while actively collaborating in the investigation. The information collected have been shared and will now be used to try to better understand the nature of certain types of accidents.
