Selling its electric cars with autonomous driving functions will be more complicated for Tesla on the German market from today. KBA, the federal body that issues vehicle and vehicle component approvals valid in Germany and Europe, has decided to intensify regulatory controls on Autopilot driver assistance technology, which is creating many headaches for Tesla around the world. In particular, under the KBA’s lens there would be the automated lane change function Tesla and consequently its possible approval for use in Europe.
According to Autonews, which cites a report by the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, greater regulatory scrutiny by the federal body is putting it at risk Tesla’s commercialization of its automated vehicle technology. As mentioned, the Autopilot system is also creating various problems for Tesla in other parts of the world: only last week the NHTSA, the body that deals with regulating traffic on US roads, opened a second investigation against Tesla branded technology, for a possible malfunction that would put the safety of other road users at risk. Returning to Germany, however, it is a new obstacle in the country for Tesla, which for months has been fighting with the German bureaucracy to receive the definitive go-ahead to be able to start production in its new Berlin Gigafactory.
