El Shafee Elsheikh, one of the so-called ‘Beatles’ of ISIS, the cell composed of four British Muslims, all originally from London, who had joined the jihadist group in Syria at the time of the caliphate, was sentenced to life imprisonment in the United States. . Elsheikh, the American media reported, was sentenced for his role in the death of four US hostages James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller kidnapped by the self-styled Islamic State.
All but Mueller were beheaded and gruesome videos of the executions were leaked online. Mueller was instead forced into slavery and raped several times by the then leader of the Islamic State Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before being killed.
Elsheikh’s life sentence was served as the United States agreed not to apply the death penalty in exchange for extradition.
