Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, beaten by Swiatek, already lost his second grand slam final this year.
Polish Iga Swiatek won the women’s singles final of the US Open early Sunday morning. He overthrew Tunisia in the final Ons Jabeurin set 6–2, 7–6 (7–5).
Swiatek decided the victory with the second match point. The final lasted almost two hours.
Swiatek earned $2.6 million in prize money for his win.
“Fortunately, it’s not cash,” the Pole joked after the match, according to the news agency AFP, when he was handed a prize check for winning the tournament.
to Swiatek the win was the third grand slam of his career. She has previously won the French Open tennis tournament in 2020 and 2022. The last time a female player won two grand slam tournaments in the same year in tennis was in 2016.
For Jabeur, who lost to Swiatek, the loss was the second in the grand slam final this year. Jabeur also lost the final in July at the Wimbledon tournament. If she won, she would have become the first African woman to win a grand slam tournament.
“I tried hard, but Iga didn’t make it easy. He deserved to win today. I don’t particularly like him today, but that’s okay,” Jabeur said, according to AFP.
21-year-old Swiatek is number one in the women’s world rankings. Jabeur, 28, is ranked fifth in the world.
