Towards the end of the Goldfish series, the comedy turns into a tragedy, which feels right. No need to force a laugh.
Can you on any topic to make a comedy? Is it possible to laugh at war, death, suffering? There’s definitely a limit going somewhere, and at least you have to be really careful what you laugh at.
Domestic series Goldfish deals with comedy on a subject that is not usually ridiculed. Its protagonist is a 55-year-old woman who develops early Alzheimer’s, or memory disease. He begins to lose touch not only with his memory but also gradually with everything else, his daily life, his work and his relationships.
Anyone who has to deal with a memory disorder in one way or another certainly hopes that in the end the whole situation could just be laughed at, but unfortunately the experience is mostly horrible and not very common.
As people’s life expectancy increases, more and more people know what feelings they are dealing with. Fortunately, Alzheimer’s of working age is a rare disease.
Company turning a tragedy into a comedy is bold, but the series immediately arouses distrust at the critical moments of the beginning. The main character, social hairdresser Leena, has become distracted and goes to the doctor, who mumbles and pushes things. Leena says she only forgot the word once, and the doctor immediately directs her to a description of her head.
After a while, the doctor reverses the result for Leena. She talks confused about Alzheimer’s and dementia, and Leena doesn’t realize anything. So why laugh here? For unskilled doctors? Anyway, there are weirdly unpleasant bystanders in the series.
After this, the events and above all Leena’s illness progresses at a rapid pace. The credit card is starting to rumble and the bar counters are attracting.
A big part the series is about how Leena hides a diagnosis from her close circle and at first also from her chilling daughter, who at the same time struggles with her research career and relationship. As such, the setup is credible: often in the thirties, things pile up.
The secrecy of the disease is purely distressing, although misunderstandings are part of the comedy. It is only at the end of the series that the importance of transparency is finally emphasized, and the final episodes are at the heart of things anyway. The roles of daughter and mother have changed. Comedy also turns into a tragedy, which feels right. No need to force a laugh.
Series based on its developers Essi Hellénin and Tatiana Elfin to their own experiences of their loved ones, so they have a basic understanding of how things are actually going.
The guidance is often provided by the successful Anna Dahlman (Sister-in-law and Adults). This time does not go into the pipe. Katariina Kaitue keeps a distance from Leena ‘s character, and Miila Virtanen is in the role of a daughter almost all the time in the same mixed emotional state.
