The technical area of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) understood that the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will not need to return the luxury watch he received as a gift during his first term in 2005. As revealed by the Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system) in September last year, Lula got a Cartier Santos Dumont valued at R$60,000.
The watch is made of 18 carat white gold and 750 silver, and has a crown topped with a blue sapphire stone. It is one of the French brand’s most classic models.
The audit concluded that gifts of high commercial value, even if they are considered very personal items, must be returned to the Union. But, in Lula’s case, this was not recommended, as the technical area assessed that the understanding cannot be applied retroactively .
The opinion was prepared by the Audit Unit Specialized in Governance and Innovation (AudGovernança) at TCU.
The information is from the newspaper The State of S. Paulo.
