It made no difference that the biggest global pop star, Taylor Swift, would support Kamala Harris. Nor the participation of Beyonce at a Texas rally nor the progressive veteran of Bruce Springsteen put at the service of the Democratic candidate. Nor, of course, the predictable chorus of Hollywood stars, so unanimously leftist. donald trumpwith Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock like a starving legion of celebrities, it swept the elections and demonstrated that the influence of supposedly influential stars is more than relative.
Taylor Swift lost.
Even, perhaps, it would mobilize a vote trumpist.
Because In support for Trump there is a deep challenge to the system. A harsh howl against the elites. And for a large mass of Trump voters, whose hard core is made up of people without university education who work their asses off from dawn to dusk to earn a living, Taylor Swift is pure elite: a progressive millionaire who (on top of that!) tends to feminist discourse.
Curiously, Trump (a fame obsessive) feared Taylor Swift’s statement.
An absurd fear.
The stars are no longer what they were. The rude sister-in-law of Joe Rogan exhibited to the world through his podcast or the fanatical delusions of Tucker Carlsona journalist whom Fox fired as an extremist and liar, are worth more in the current ecosystem of political propaganda.
AND Taylor Swift is an artist who sells tickets for $2,000 So, if you belong to the proletariat that is suffocated by inflation and has to juggle to make ends meet, it is of little importance what that celebrity advises you on electoral matters.
American progressivism must learn (Bernie Sanders has said it) to reconnect with that immense mass of voters without a university degree and who belong to the so-called popular classes. Taylor Swift is an enormous talent in contemporary pop music. That is beyond any doubt. Also Beyoncé. But they no longer serve much purpose as a political asset.
And yet, let’s be clear that it’s admirable for someone like Taylor Swift to express her opinions in these violent times. That means risk. It’s not always free to get involved. There are artists who prefer to remain silent and sell tickets. There are cynically equidistant billionaires like Jeff Bezos, who remained silent during the campaign and the day after Trump’s victory launched a servile congratulatory message (which made it completely clear why he prevented The Washington Post, which he owns, from asking for the vote for Kamala Harris).
There are people who stand in profile during the fight and stand next to the winner when it’s time.
This is not the case with Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift lost.
But in that defeat there is something honorable.
Let’s not forget it.
