Syria: US raid against pro-Iran groups after attack on American contractors
I am a total of at least 19 fighters reportedly killed in US operations in Syria against targets of Iran-linked groups. This was reported this morning by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an NGO based in Great Britain and sources in the Arab country, according to which among the 19 dead there are three soldiers of the forces of Damascus and 16 fighters of the forces supported by Iran, 11 of which were Syrian.
Operations against Islamic Republic-backed forces in eastern Syria erupted in response to last Thursday’s drone strike that killed a US contractor, while another was injured along with five soldiers.
Syria, Biden: “We do not want conflict with Iran but we will act decisively to protect Americans”
The US President Joe Biden has warned Iran that the US will “act decisively” to protect Americans, after air strikes against Tehran-backed forces in response to Thursday’s attack on the Hasakah base in the northeast of the country, with an Iranian drone according to Washington, in which an American contractor was killed and five soldiers were injured and another contractor.
“Make no mistake: The United States is not trying to provoke a conflict with Iran, but be prepared that we will act forcefully to protect our own,” he said, speaking to reporters during his visit to Canada. “We will not stop,” he added, replying to a reporter who asked if there would be high costs for Iran.
On Thursday, two American F-15s attacked two sites used by militias supported by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, killing 11 militiamen, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. A US base near al-Omar was attacked yesterday morning. Biden specified that the United States “will continue to maintain our efforts to counter terrorist threats in the region”.
