The German Society of Gastroenterology reports that short bowel syndrome is a medical condition that occurs when a large portion of the small intestine is removed, for example, due to Crohn’s disease, which is a chronic inflammation of the intestine.
The association indicated that as a result, the body becomes unable to absorb sufficient nutrients from food, which leads to malnutrition on the one hand, and suffering from many problems in the digestive system on the other hand.
Symptoms of short bowel syndrome include weight loss due to nutrient deficiencies, severe watery diarrhea, fatty stools, and lactose (milk sugar) intolerance, in addition to feeling bloated, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
The troubles of short bowel syndrome can be combated by medications, for example, to stop watery diarrhea, and excess stomach acid secretion can be combated by certain medications (proton pump inhibitors).
To avoid malnutrition, you should follow a healthy, balanced diet based on fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grain products. You can also resort to nutritional supplements, provided that they are taken under the supervision of a doctor.
