Sylvester Stallone, the eternal Rocky, has been putting together one of the most important watch collections in the world for 30 years, and now he has decided to sell some of them. At the auction, held this Wednesday, June 5, 2024, by the iconic house Sobethy’s in New York, 6.1 million euros were raised. But, without a doubt, the highest rated watch was a Grandmaster Chime 6300 from the Swiss house Patek Philippe, whose final price reached 5.4 million dollars (about five million euros at the current exchange rate). The actor has guarded this item with suspicion for years, as it is considered one of the most complex wristwatches in the world. Beyond informing about the time, it has 20 different functionalities, among which its five bell mechanisms or its date repeater stand out, which audibly indicates both the day and the phases of the moon. “I bought it as a collector. I treat it like you would treat a painting. It is a work of art,” Stallone said in a video shown during the auction, where he also confessed that he has never used it.
The piece, made of white gold, is considered by the auction house as the “holy grail” of watch collectors due to the complexity of its development, production and assembly, which took 100,000 hours. Until now, only seven identical units have been manufactured, establishing itself in the world of collectors as “the most expensive watch ever sold for 30 million euros in 2019.” The auctioned piece has now been presented in a luxurious box with the actor’s name engraved, a handwritten note by him and a certificate of origin dated December 15, 2021, confirming that he is the original buyer. In addition, it includes other objects: “A travel case, cufflinks, USB drive, sealed adjustment pin, hang tag, an iPad and Apple AirPods with a branded case, an adapter and a charger.”
This is the first Grandmaster Chime model to be presented at a commercial auction. With a starting price of 2.3 million euros, it was expected that it would exceed 5 million euros, and so it has been. The actor explained in his video that he acquired the piece after writing personally to the board of directors of Patek Philippe, who finally agreed to sell it to him. “Looking at these watches, I feel really lucky to have had them – they serve as a reminder that hard work pays off. While parting with this collection was bittersweet for me, I proudly appreciate having owned them and hope they are appreciated and admired in their next homes,” he concluded in his video.
Among the watches in Sylvester Stallone’s large collection, other pieces stand out, such as a Patek Philippe from the Nautilus family, which includes an olive green dial decorated with 32 diamonds and housed in a stainless steel case. This collector’s piece has sold for 452,000 euros. Also worth highlighting are pieces such as an Audemars Piguet, sold for 209,000 euros, or a Paneral, which the actor wore during the recording of The mercenaries 2and which reached the figure of 88,000 euros.
It is not the first time that you can bid on Stallone’s watches. Already in 2020 he sold an assortment that consisted of a Panerai (in the mid-nineties, he fell in love with the brand and began giving his watches to friends, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger) and four Richard Mille watches, finally reaching the figure of 2.8 million euros. But on this occasion there was also a protagonist: the Panerai Luminor that he used during the recording of Daylightsold for 196,900 euros.
