Swedish elections | Sweden’s right wing is already celebrating the election victory, Andersson announced his resignation

The result of Sweden’s parliamentary elections held on Sunday was so close that the counting of votes has been extended since Wednesday.

Swedish the result of the tight elections is coming out during the evening, but the country’s right wing has already started celebrating openly.

The right-wing bloc is getting 176 seats in the Diet and the red-green bloc 173 seats, while the counting of votes is still in progress in only a couple of ten voting districts.

Right in the last meters of the vote count, the right has increased its lead. At first there was only one place between the factions.

The election result means that there is a change of power in Sweden. The social democrats who have ruled for a long time will step aside and the chairman of the moderate coalition will become prime minister Ulf Kristersson.

Prime Minister of Sweden Magdalena Andersson told a news conference in the evening that he would request to resign from the duties of prime minister. He admitted his defeat and said he would make an official resignation request on Thursday.

At the beginning of the press conference, Andersson, among other things, praised the achievements of his own government and mentioned, among other things, the negotiations related to NATO membership.

Andersson also praised his own party’s election result and the status of the largest party achieved by the Social Democrats.

“We are the largest party in Sweden, and the largest party in Northern Europe,” Andersson said.

Andersson found it unfortunate that the parties of the right-wing bloc have chosen to cooperate with the Sweden Democrats.

“The moderate coalition, the liberal party and the Christian Democrats have chosen their way and do not want to cooperate with other parties. It is unfortunate.”

However, Andersson said that if Ulf Kristersson fails to form a government, “his door is open”.

“We social democrats are ready to cooperate with everyone who wants to solve Sweden’s problems,” he said.

In practice the moderate coalition is only the third largest party in the elections. The success of the right is not Kristersson’s, but the Sweden Democrats’ merit. The Sweden Democrats are getting 11 new seats in the Diet.

Party chairman Jimmie Åkesson however, is not a viable prime minister, as the other right-wing parties do not support him for the position.

The Social Democrats retain their position as Sweden’s largest party and are about to gain seven new seats. However, the result does not save the position of party chairperson Magdalena Andersson as Sweden’s prime minister.

At the beginning of his press conference in the evening, Andersson said that the results are already clear enough that conclusions can be drawn from them. At the same time, he announced that he would submit his resignation on Thursday morning. HS is showing live coverage of the event at the top of this article.
