The Swedish Security Service said today, Thursday, that an investigation at the crime scene at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines transporting gas from Russia to Europe has found evidence that explosions caused the accident.
The Swedish and Danish authorities are investigating four leaks from the two pipelines, in the exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea of the two countries, since they were detected last week.
“After completing the crime scene investigation, the Swedish Security Service can conclude that explosions occurred on Nord Stream 1 and 2 in the Swedish Economic Zone,” the Swedish Security Service said in a statement.
He added that the gas pipelines were severely damaged, and that some materials were recovered from the site for analysis. He continued, saying that the evidence “reinforced the suspicion of serious sabotage.”
The Swedish Prosecuting Authority had said, in a separate statement earlier today, that the area was no longer cordoned off. Gas leaked into the sea in the area for about a week.
The Swedish Public Prosecutor said that the preliminary results “reinforce the suspicions of sabotage” with “explosions” that caused “serious damage”.
