Suzuki is further expanding its mobility horizons and after cars, motorcycles and outboard engines has announced an important investment in the flying electric cars. The Hamamatsu house has in fact communicated that it has signed a collaboration agreement with the specialized startup SkyDrive which provides for joint work for the development and sale of electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the goal is to broaden the range of action to new marketsstarting with India where the brand holds half of the shares of the automotive market.
Suzuki has already announced several investments to strengthen its position in the region and to expand its production of electric cars and batteries, putting on the plate about 104.4 billion rupees, about 1.24 billion euros at current exchange rates. As for timing and targets, the two companies they did not provide specific targets. However, SkyDrive aims to start the air taxi service during the 2025 Universal Exposition in Osaka, Japan, as well as to start the service in other regions of Japan. The startup is currently working on a prototype of a two-seater flying car.
Founded in July 2018 with the mission to “lead a mobility revolution”, SkyDrive has promoted the development of flying cars and cargo drones working to promote a shared vision of a future where people will use air mobility as a means of transport in their daily lives. SkyDrive is the only airline in Japan that has successfully conducted manned test flights and is now involved in designing a system for future air mobility as a member of the Japanese Public-Private Council for Advanced Air Mobility. The two companies will also pursue common objectives regarding emissions reduction and sustainability.
