Low-income people young people in households experience unpleasant media experiences more often when using a smartphone, according to a recent study by the National Audiovisual Institute (Kavi) from the survey.

For respondents who described the financial situation of their home as somewhat or very bad, their use of social media emphasized loneliness and experiences of being outside, pressure to look good and low self-esteem.

In the responses of young people from low-income households, the experiences of encountering hate speech and discriminatory content as well as financial disadvantages were also emphasized.

In November 2023, more than a thousand Finns aged 15–29 responded to an online panel about young people's smartphone use. The survey commissioned by Kavi was carried out by E2 Tutkimus.
