Migrants who have submitted an asylum application in the United States no longer have to wait for a decision in Mexico. On Thursday, the Supreme Court backed President Joe Biden’s decision to overturn the policies of his predecessor Donald Trump, international news agencies reported.
Trump introduced the policy in 2018, known as Remain in Mexico, to counter the high influx of migrants from Mexico. These are migrants who are not Mexican themselves, but come from developing countries. While awaiting their asylum application, they were sent back to Mexico. In total, some 68,000 migrants were returned between 2018 and 2021. The policy was widely criticized, partly because there were reports of sexual abuse and kidnappings in the Mexican border towns.
Biden immediately suspended the policy shortly after he was sworn in as president in January 2021 and later changed it. The Republican states of Texas and Missouri have sued him, but now the Court backs Biden. The current president wants a more “humane” approach to migration policy on the southern border.
