The theme music from Super Mario Bros it will be the first song from a video game to be preserved by the Library of Congress of the United States of America in the “National Recording Registry”.
You should know that since 2002 the Library has managed the “National Recording Registry” of the United States, a list of sound recordings “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant, and/or which inform or reflect life in the United States”. Each year, 25 pieces of music are selected to be added to the National Recording Registry, which means they will be held in the Library of Congress. This year, Koji Kondo’s composition for Super Mario Bros is one of 25 shortlisted – the first time a video game music track has been added to the Registry.
Other sound recordings chosen this year include John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”, John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”, Madonna’s “Like a Virgin”, “All I Want for Christmas” is You” by Mariah Carey and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by the Eurythmics.
Although the national library already has one vast sound collection of almost four million piecesthe entries selected for the Registry – now totaling 625 – are considered so important that they must be kept permanently.
“These recordings they were not necessarily selected as the ‘best’ recordings of all time, but rather as works of lasting importance to American culture and, therefore, in need of permanent preservation by the Library of Congress or other qualified institution,” explains the Library of Congress.
