A British Government led by the current Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, would begin a pilot experiment in September 2025 to test the operation of a military and civilian National Service. It would be twelve months and mandatory for 18-year-olds, although the Minister of Defense, James Cleverly, has pointed out that no one will go to jail for refusing to comply with the order. There will be options to participate in non-military activities.
The original idea, introduced by Clement Attlee’s Labor Government after the Second World War, was limited to conscription for military service. Recruits deployed through the military for 18 months and spent the next four years on the reserve list. In 1960 it changed to a professional Army and reservists continue to exist on a voluntary basis.
David Cameron, promoter of an idea, Big Society, that would restore social ties supposedly broken in contemporary life, wanted to launch a National Citizen Service of volunteers who wanted to connect in charitable activities. Charities often live on state funds and budgetary austerity after 2008 dried up the idea.
National cohesion
Sunak and Cleverly have highlighted the supposed benefit of greater national cohesion as a result of successive generations sharing time of their youth with young people from other parts of the country. The incentive to join the armed forces indicates the option of acquiring new qualifications; in cybersecurity, for example.
The ad is part of a conservative strategy to present striking ideas at the start of the election campaign. The opposition has predicted that this service will never be created and has criticized the reduction of military personnel in the Tory era.
