Foggy mind, irritability, more tired than usual. A few days have now passed since the clocks moved forward an hour, imposed by the debut of summer time, and there are those who are still feeling the pinch. It also happens when the movement of the clock gears goes in reverse, therefore with the return of solar time. Experts talk about mini jet lag. The ideal 'victims'? “Extreme owls and larks”, explains Carolina Lombardi, director of the Sleep Medicine Center of the San Luca Auxological Institute, Milan, to Adnkronos Salute. In this specific case, the 'super owls' would be at greater risk of suffering from “the artificial amputation of a necessary part of sleep”, but little changes.
Is it possible that it lasted that long? “It is very subjective – highlights the expert – in the sense that all time changes, especially changes linked to external conditioning with respect to our circadian rhythm, require an adaptation of our organism. The times and methods of this adaptation are different depending on of the conditions from which we start”. In other words, “a person who does not have any type of sleep disorder or difficulty may not even perceive this need for adaptation. A person, on the other hand, who already starts from a situation characterized by a little more difficulty with sleep, or however, with a tendency to a phase shift in the circadian rhythm, it obviously adapts to an imposed time change more difficult than others”.
“One hour is not a great request for adaptation – Lombardi reasons – but it is still an exogenous request for adaptation that arrives twice a year and this, especially in “pre-existing” conditions of fragility, can cause greater difficulty”. So much so that some experts and scientific societies such as the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Aasm) have taken clear positions against periodic 'switches' between summer and standard time. The one launched by the AASM for several years now, for example, is precisely a crusade against summer time. For these experts, “seasonal time changes should be eliminated in favor of a fixed time, valid all year round. And current evidence supports the adoption of standard time”, solar time, “which aligns better with human circadian biology”. (continued)
