Congress already officially has a request on the table to open an investigative commission to investigate the political responsibilities of the management of the catastrophic DANA in Valencia, which has left more than 200 dead. This Tuesday, Sumar (where Compromís is also integrated), ERC, Junts and Podemos registered jointly a petition to launch this body, after having separately announced last week that they would do so. Both the purples and the Valencians, who are defining Sumar’s position in this matter, are committed to also calling members of the Government of Spain to the commission, in addition to leaders of the Generalitat Valenciana.
The investigation commission registered by the formations on the left of the PSOE would have as its priority objective “to identify all those responsible with powers in the management of the DANA and determine political responsibilities on the cuts applied to emergency services and their direct influence on the response to the disaster.” It would also be dedicated to “investigating the management and delay in the communication of civil protection alerts, especially in areas that received notifications late.” .
But Sumar, ERC, Junts and Podemos not only want to clarify responsibilities for the actions during the DANA day, but also in the following days. Another of the stated objectives of the registered commission of inquiry is “examine the response of the Valencian Government and the rest of the administrations in the management, coordination of emergency personnel and various supports to evaluate their level of effectiveness in managing the crisis in the most affected areas”, since as of October 31 “the most affected populations still “No basic supplies, including food and water, had been delivered to them.”
Although the four parties that registered the investigation commission are committed to calling members of the central government to appear, they all agreed that the greatest responsibility for the mismanagement of DANA lies with the Valencian president Carlos Mazón. It is him, several deputies stated, who “had to make the decisions”, and it was his Government that was not “up to the task and tried to save a tourist weekend and commercial activity before saving lives,” in the words of Podemos co-spokesperson, Javier Sánchez Serna.
The PSOE will register its own request
Just a few minutes after the request of several of its parliamentary partners became effective, the PSOE announced that in the coming days it will also register its own request to open a commission of inquiry into DANA in Congress. It was the parliamentary spokesperson for the socialists, Patxi López, who explained that his group wants this commission has “a broader scope” and is not limited to the Valencian Community, but also investigates what happened in Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha, also affected (although to a much lesser extent) by the tragedy.
Asked if they are willing to have officials from Pedro Sánchez’s Executive appear in the commission, López responded that “of course members of the Government will have to pass”, since “they will have to put on the table” how they acted “if we want to learn from what we have done.”
