AND' suicide emergency in prisons. “In order to prevent and combat the dramatic phenomenon” within the “detainee population”, the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio – “I signed a decree that provides for the current year the allocation of 5 million euros to the penitentiary administration for the strengthening of treatment and psychological services in the institutions, through the involvement of specialized experts and professionals external to the administration”.
“The annual budget allocation for the purposes of preventing the phenomenon of suicide and reducing the distress of prisoners has more than doubled, confirming the government's commitment to promptly adopting the measures necessary to improve detention conditions in penitentiary institutions, including in view of a more structured and long-lasting intervention to be proposed as a priority in the next budget law”, added Nordio.
