The most popular and perhaps oldest is its existence as a game as a service. No one expected a title about the Suicide Squad to use this model, much less one made by Rocksteady. After playing it for a while, I really think it's its biggest weakness.
Suicide Squad's release was doomed since it was announced as a game as a service
When it was first revealed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice LeagueI remember there was some intrigue. It was interesting that the next game from the creators of Batman: Arkham will focus on this peculiar team that also had to face the most powerful heroes on the planet.
Time passed without news and then came the preview of its gameplay, where this aspect of the game as a service was also revealed. Given this, even the fans who were most expecting it showed their annoyance. Especially since outside of the characters it was no different from other titles that use this model. Mostly because of its gameplay that didn't take advantage of these villains and had everyone just using guns.
The negative reaction made Warner Bros. decide to delay Suicide Squad to supposedly calm fans' uncertainty. However, we now have the title in our hands and they did not leave the model behind, while the gameplay remains very similar to what we saw at the beginning.
After playing it personally for a while, I realize that the gameplay is actually quite polished. In fact, at times it can be fun, although its objectives can become monotonous and repetitive.. I can even see what could have been a better game hidden behind some questionable decisions.
It could have worked better as a campaign with options to enjoy it in multiplayer
Something that seemed like a pleasant surprise to me Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League It's your story. The squad's path toward confronting Brainiac and finding ways to take down the Justice League really presents an interesting journey. Also the team's interactions and personalities shine quite brightly and provide entertaining moments.
This suggests that this title could have worked much better as a simple campaign that you go through from start to finish. Furthermore, it could have worked that way, without the need to make it a game as a service. They were able to give us something similar to Gear of War 3where up to four players could enjoy the campaign together. Later, perhaps add DLC with new stories if what they wanted was to continue generating money after its launch.
Especially if we take into account Rocksteady's pedigree to give us entertaining games with great stories. They were even able to take better advantage of the DC universe, but unfortunately they had to fit everything into Suicide Squad to ensure that it gave them content for months.
This is particularly noticeable at the end of the game, when it is revealed that there are 12 other Brainiacs in the multiverse and the squad sets out to stop them. This just feels like an excuse to probably give us 12 seasons of content in the future. Although with the reception it has received, we doubt it will have much of a future.
Suicide Squad is further proof that you can't make games as a service of anything
In recent years we have seen how beloved series leave behind their origins as experiences focused on their story and gameplay and want to become games as a service. In fact Naughty Dog tried it with The Last of Us and we already saw what happened. Not everything is made to be a game as a service.
Suicide Squad It shows that it will have to expand too much and even leave its premise behind if it wants to continue with this model. Already in the main plot we finish with the Justice League. What are there going to be another 12 Justice Leagues coming every three months to justify the content?
The reality is that many times beloved IPs are taken to implement this model, simply so that they are less likely to fail. Even so, the public already seems more attentive to these practices and is more careful with this type of games. Especially with those that already charge you just to play and will continue to add content for which you have to pay.
I insist that in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League hides a promising game that ended up buried by game-as-a-service practices. Repetitive missions to obtain resources to create more powerful weapons and of course microtransactions. This insistence on turning it into something it shouldn't have simply backfired on them.
Although one positive thing about this is that studios will probably think twice before doing something similar. Unfortunately this potential change came with a serious blow to the squad's popularity and a huge stain on Rocksteady's record. I wish they had played to their strengths instead of forcing them to create something that isn't their forte.
