São Paulo, 23 – The Port of Santos registered 13.5% more cargo movement in the period from January to April compared to the first four months of last year, or 57.0 million tons, a record for the period. In a note, the Santos Port Authority (APS) says that in April the movement was also the largest for the month, at 14.7 million tons, 7.0% above April 2024.
Sugar shipments abroad are the highlight of the year: totaling 7.2 million tons in the four months, growth of 88.3% and 48.8% in the month. Coffee beans also stood out, reaching 818.4 thousand tons shipped in the four months (+60.3%) and 226.8 thousand tons in April (+97.0%). Soybean meal grew 21.5% in the year (3.1 million tons) and 31.5% in the month (1.0 million tons).
“We will have public investments of around R$10 billion to cover the expansion of the Port of Santos in view of the increasingly strong demand for cargo movement”, said the president of APS, Anderson Pomini, in the note.
Considering all cargo, shipments grew by 15.8% in the first four months (42.3 million tons) and discharges by 7.3% (14.6 million tons). In April, shipments totaled 11.2 million tons (+11.1%) and discharges decreased by 4.4%, reaching 3.4 million tons.
Containerized cargo movement grew 14.6% in the month (450,509 TEU – unit equivalent to a 20-foot container), and 19% (1.72 million TEU) in the four months, moving 19.1 million tons until April 2024, 30.8% above the same period in 2023.
“Solid bulk totaled 28.5 million tons in the year, a growth of 7% compared to the same period of the previous year, being characterized as the largest accumulated brand in this four-month period, with sugar and pelleted soybeans,” said APS.
Liquid bulk reached 6.4 million tons, an increase of 9.2% and the best accumulated figure in the period, driven mainly by gasoline (+40.3%), fuel oil (+23.9%) and alcohol ( +22.4%), compared to the same period last year.
