Protests renewed in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, and other cities, yesterday, to demand civilian rule in the country.
Local sources said: Thousands of people demonstrated in the capital, Khartoum, and the cities of Omdurman, Bahri, Madani and Kassala.
The demonstrations came under the slogan “July 31 Million” at the invitation of the “Freedom and Change” forces and “Coordination Committees of the Resistance” to demand civilian rule.
The demonstrators closed a number of main and secondary streets in the center of the capital with concrete barriers, tree trunks and burning tires.
The security authorities also closed the “Al-Mak Nimr” bridge, which links the capital, Khartoum, Bahri, the streets leading to the presidential palace, and the vicinity of the army’s general command, to avoid the arrival of demonstrators.
The center of the capital witnessed an intense security presence, especially in the vicinity of the presidential palace, which led to the accumulation of cars and traffic congestion.
Demonstrators carrying national flags chanted slogans calling for the return of civilian rule.
The demonstrators raised banners saying: “A complete civil state,” “The people are stronger and apostasy is impossible,” “Freedom, peace, and justice,” and “Yes to democratic civil rule.”
This comes amid news that the military component intends to announce a new prime minister within days, but the Sovereign Council sources denied this in statements to Al-Ittihad, and confirmed that the military component had nothing to do with the names proposed to take over the premiership, but the sources confirmed at the same time that any A document in the transitional period without national political consensus and consensus around it is practically meaningless, and that any declaration of a government by any party without accord will not find acceptance and will not succeed.
On August 21, 2019, Sudan began a transitional phase to end with elections in early 2024, during which power is shared by the army, civil forces and armed movements that signed a peace agreement with the government in 2020.
