Subaru, over 1000 hp electric for the ‘Ring | record FormulaPassion.it

Every now and then the doubt comes to mind that the era of extreme cars, designed exclusively to beat records, is about to end. But fortunately, the car manufacturers occasionally surprise us with some ambitious and crazy projects. TOhe Tokyo Motor Show 2022 Subaru and Subaru Tecnica International (STI) have launched the STI E-RA concept, a car that aims to break the track record at the Nürburgring circuit. With 1088 all electric horsepower, the car with extremely streamlined and aerodynamic lines, in a real prototype format, he will try to cover the track in six minutes and 40 seconds, or 400 seconds.

The car will ply some Japanese tracks in 2022, before being transferred to Germany in 2023. STI has drawn up a precise program, with the aim of demonstrating how the electric car can have the same emotional characteristics as the most iconic models prepared by the its technicians. The STI E-RA concept will have four-wheel drive technology, a power of 800 kW based on Subaru proprietary technology and divided into four electric motors, with torque vectoring. High torque motors will have an integrated inverter and specific gear, both developed and supplied by Yamaha. The lithium-ion battery will have a storage capacity of 60 kWh.

The torque vectoring system is a technology that balances the grip limit of each of the four wheels. For maximum effect, the best way is to independently apply optimum drive torque to the four wheels as the load moves. To accomplish this, the system calculates the signals from the sensors for wheel speed, vehicle speed, steering angle, G-force, yaw rate, brake pressure and wheel load, determining the torque of each wheel in real time to obtain a stability factor and give instructions to the inverter. Subaru has stated that it will use the knowledge gained from this project to improve its future models.

This is how Subaru’s plan to move towards electrification continues: its goal is to obtain 40% of global sales from electrified vehicles by 2030, but for now the offensive has been generally mild. With the E-RA STI, however, there could be a boost.
