An earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck 57 kilometres south of Panguna in Papua New Guinea early Monday, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the earthquake was 41 kilometers deep.
No tsunami warning was issued due to the earthquake, according to the US Tsunami Warning System.
