In the opinion of Sdp chairman Antti Lindtman, the president of the republic should plead for reconciliation and an agreement. The message was repeated in Yle's A-studio by the chairman of the parliamentary group Tytti Tuppurainen.
Sdp's chairman Antti Lindtman demands Ilta-Sanomthat the president of the republic Alexander Stubb would take a stand on the ongoing labor market dispute.
Lindtman refers to the events of the past week and says that he feels like “this is no longer in anyone's hands”. The Ay movement is opposed by the prime minister Petteri Orpon (kok) the government's actions with strikes, after which the employers have told about the shutdown of several factories and the suspension of salary payments.
“Now that it has become clear that the prime minister is unable to find a solution, all eyes are now on the president of the republic. It's time to break the silence in the State guest house,” Lindtman tells IS.
“If anything, this is a situation where I would also need a value leader. And either the kind of public speech that pleads for reconciliation and agreement, or appeals directly to the parties – both the country's government and other parties – to find solutions.”
Sdp's chairman of the parliamentary group Titti Tuppurainen repeated the demand on Thursday evening in Yle's A-studio. According to him, calming down the situation requires leadership.
“If the prime minister himself is not capable of this, then it would be reasonable for the government to make room for the president of the republic, Alexander Stubb, to become the solution to this situation,” Tuppurainen said.
Previously on Thursday, the role of the solver was also proposed to the former president of the republic To Sauli Niinistö. Central party secretary Antti Siika-aho raised the issue in his article in Suomenmaa magazine.
“Would President Sauli Niinistö be a suitable person to mediate? Niinistö is trusted and he understands Finland's best interests,” wrote Siika-aho.
Also Liike Nytin Harry Harkimo suggested Niinistö as a mediator when he spoke during the parliament's question hour on Thursday.
Harkimo called the government's reforms good, but doubted that an agreement would ever be reached.
“What do people think when they listen to us arguing here, when all of Finland is standing? This doesn't make any sense. I'm not going to ask the Prime Minister to take responsibility when he has said ten times that he will not negotiate on these issues. I ask the prime minister to consider appointing a mediator. There is one person in Finland who can mediate this, and that is President Sauli Niinistö.”
Niinistö has so far, at least in public, not taken a strong position on the prevailing dispute situation.
In 2015, Niinistö discussed negotiating a competitiveness agreement with the labor market parties. Niinistö has said that he did this at the request of the parties.
