Head of the Ministry of Defense Shoigu: the continued strikes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant will lead to disaster
Strikes by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) could lead to catastrophic consequences. The head of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Sergei Shoigu, spoke about the increasing shelling of the station from Ukraine.
“The ongoing strikes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are of particular concern, which could lead to catastrophic consequences,” he said.
According to him, all those responsible will definitely receive the deserved punishment. “It’s only a matter of time,” Shoigu emphasized.
Shelling of the Zaporozhye NPP by the Ukrainian Armed Forces has become more frequent
In recent months, attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant have become more frequent. Russia's permanent representative to the UN and the UN Security Council, Vasily Nebenzya, drew attention to this.
Over the past few months, such attacks have not only resumed, but have sharply intensified. The Russian Armed Forces detected and suppressed up to 100-plus unmanned aerial vehicles per week. Our country regularly informed and continues to inform the UN Security Council and the IAEA secretariat about these unacceptable actions
Thus, on March 14, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked the station using a non-shell explosive device. It was dropped near the fence covering the diesel fuel tanks.
The station's press service said that if the impact had fallen on these tanks, the consequences could have been critical.
On April 5, the Zaporizhia NPP was attacked using unmanned aerial vehicles. The operation of the station was not disrupted and critical infrastructure was not damaged, but the attacks may affect the further operation of the station.
On April 18, Ukrainian drones attacked the unique training center of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. This was a repeat attack on the center – it was first attacked on April 9, ten minutes after passing near employees of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Now all units of the Zaporozhye NPP are shut down. “The radiation background at the station and the surrounding area is unchanged and is at a level corresponding to the normal operation of power units,” station representatives said.

The IAEA called the situation unpredictable
The organization's general director, Rafael Grossi, called the situation at the station extremely unpredictable. According to him, the threat of nuclear danger is very real.
Over the past week, the IAEA has not received information about shelling of the station, but this does not exclude the possibility of new attacks. According to Grossi, those responsible for the attacks on the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant are ignoring calls from the world community to prevent a nuclear accident. He emphasized that the situation could change for the worse at any moment.
