Strike at the Spanish headquarters of Ubisoft, one of the largest video game companies

The workers at the Barcelona headquarters of Ubisoft, the French multinational video games, have announced on Thursday that they are on strike. In full global crisis in the industry, with layoffs of large companies worldwide, this is the first formal strike that is called in Spain in this sector.

The strike, formally convened by the CGT union, has been announced for February 13, coinciding with the one organized in the sector in France. The origin of the discomfort of Ubisoft Barcelona employees is the multinational policy of reducing teleworking, although the layoffs that have been carried out for now in studies from other countries are added (about 500 casualties (about 500 casualties, according to union calculations ).

Ubisoft is one of the most important and most experienced companies in the world of video games. They are the creators of successful sagas such as ‘Assassin’s Creed’, ‘Prince of Persia’ or ‘Rainbow Six’. His presence in Barcelona dates back to 2004, and currently has 190 employees in their Barcelona offices of the Diagonal Tower 00.

In a statement this Thursday, the CGT regrets the “imposition” by the company of a teleworking policy that reduces this modality by 33%. “A substantial change after five years with a system that contemplated 60% of the days of the month at remote work,” they say. Already in November the union filed a lawsuit against the company for this same decision.

As in other videogame developer companies, Ubisoft employees announced last July that were syndicated through the video game union coordinator, under the CGT umbrella. As in other countries, the crisis in which the videogame development and editing industry has plunged into Spain with layoffs and closures of studies, such as Novarama or Smilegate or the declaration of Tequila Works insolvency.
