Mexico.- The clock ticked around 10:00 a.m. this Tuesday, June 21, when the Tropical Depression ‘Celia’ strengthened into a storm over the waters of the Mexican Pacific Ocean. This meteorological phenomenon will cause heavy rains and winds in some states of the country, but, Is Sinaloa in danger?
The National Water Commission (CONAGUA) published in its Meteorological Notice No. 035-22 that the cyclone has sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 85 km/h and a displacement to the west at 19 km/h.
The passage of ‘Celia’ through the national territory has brought rains torrential in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz, states of the center and south of the Mexican Republic; while Chiapas and Michoacán have presented intense rains. Colima and Tabasco have a forecast of very heavy rains.
“The circulation of the system interacts with a low pressure channel and with Tropical Wave Number 6, conditions that generate torrential rains (from 150 to 250 millimeters [mm]) in Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz; intense (from 75 to 150mm) in Chiapas and Michoacán; very strong (from 50 to 75 mm) in Colima and Tabasco, as well as wind with gusts of 50 to 60 km/h and waves of 1 to 3 meters high on the coasts of Guerrero and Oaxaca,” the agency published.
In said communication there was no mention of possible effects on Sinaloaeven so, the northern entity with coasts on the Pacific Ocean is not exempt from inclement weather, since CONAGUA forecast possible rains and hailstorms in its notice number 344 published at 6:00 p.m. (Central Mexico time).
“Low pressure channels in interaction with instability at high levels of the atmosphere and with the entry of moisture from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, originate afternoon showers and heavy rains at very strong points accompanied by electrical discharges in the northwest, northeast and west of Mexico, with possible hailstorms in Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa and Jalisco,” the institution detailed.
