“All doubts lead us to a single answer,” reads the slogan of 'Dead or Alive', the film by Martín Casapía that delves into the day when Alan García Pérez made an attempt on his life. It is based on the book by José Vásquez and stars Stephany Orúe, who becomes a journalist. She hits theaters this April 18.
“I have never been interested in politics, it is a universe that never seduced me; On the contrary, it scared me. When I received Martín's proposal I had a little reservation, but that's what this job is like and it seemed like a challenge to take on this character of Carmen Ríos, whose objective is to find the truth,” says the actress. And she adds: “Telling stories is my fuel.”
What is your character?
“Carmen Ríos is a journalist whose father has been an APRA and with whom she has a very strong bond. The father loved Alan García and the party, and from there we started in this story. When she was young, she even belonged to the Aprista Youth, but many things happened in her family. Her mother dies and her father waits for promises that never came to be fulfilled and feels disappointed, and she is in a kind of anagnorisis. She realizes that not everything she believed was true. As she grows up she sees how things happen in her family and she decides to be a journalist. “She feels like a vigilante and she delves, little by little, into an investigation,” she explains.
The character of his father falls to the experienced actor Julio Marcone, whom Orúe admires and respects, and feels that it is a gift to share with him. “It has been a delight to work with him. We did a very nice job. The rehearsals helped me create, improvise, build bonds and I feel very lucky for how the character has turned out. The process also helped me get to know the most human side of Carmen and her personal universe with her father,” she says.
What did Stephany Orúe feel when they called her to act in 'Alive or Dead'?
Curiosity more than anything, because when I accepted the project, after reading the book and its research, it caused me a lot of interest. I entered without having any posture, only from a very pure place, and the book, furthermore, does not have any posture. It is based on a journalist's investigation. When I finished reading it I told myself that reality can surpass fiction. And yes, during filming we find out about the different theories, whether he is alive or dead, and that doubt is what gives meaning to this story and allows us to fly as actors. The story is based on real events, but we give ourselves the license to fictionalize because that is cinema. He neither denies nor affirms anything. Be careful, this is not a documentary. The film talks about a character who belongs to Peru. We don't know what the reaction will be, although the trailer has already polarized opinion.
What other projects does Stephany have?
The actress will wait for the premiere to hear the comments. In the film she also shares roles with Sergio Galliani, Omar García, Tatiana Astengo, Luis Ángel Pinasco, Américo Zuñiga, Katerina D'Onofrio, Cathy Saenz and Merly Morello. Meanwhile, she is preparing to join the cast of the successful play since May. 'The tribe' and is also promoting the soon launch of his orchestra Sound Machina together with his partner, the composer and musician El Chino Sabogal. “We want to climb onto the stage in the short term. We are a group of 11 musicians and choristers. A dance hit machine that points to its own songs.”
