It was the end of November 1997, the (gaming) world, including me, welcomed me a snappy and highly sexy Lara Croft: there were those who bought the game because they already knew the type of gameplay, after all it was the second chapter, and there were also who knew nothing about itbut this intriguing figure with a provocative braid and big guns in tow attracted him.
I fell asleep with Lara and woke up in 2024 with Eve Of Stellar Blade: of course, the girl has quite a shape, universally sexy and intriguing to any eye, it's undeniable. Technology has moved forward, we have gone from Lara's polygons to pixels and high volumes of FPS which undoubtedly make every jump and every ledge more fluid, in some way highlighted. Now, it is controversy on social mediabut I wonder, how did this happen?
The facts so far
Stellar Blade never hid, since the first videosthe exuberant physicality of its protagonist: Eve has always been seen in skimpy clothes and very, very tight, to the point that it began to spread around the world that the game was nothing special, a congenial idea to encourage oriental players to purchase (I remind you that the game is developed by Shift-Up Corporationin Korea) usually accustomed to products of this type.
The demo of the game comes out and the public realizes two things: the first is that the game is good, that in terms of gameplay it intrigues even the most experienced player enough, and the second thing, which obviously catches the eye, is the Eve's physique, now with controller in hand, is even more busty and well defined compared to passive videos. In fact being able to move Eve as you want reveals every curve and secret.
Controversy breaks out on social media: all you need to do is be in any video game themed group and, I bet my 280 hour save of Final Fantasy a screenshot of Eve and some accompanying sentences, more or less scandalous or ironic. There must have been quite a few comments below, under that photo, which I stopped to read and summarize, among the most popular are
- “Ever seen a woman?!”
- “Top costume!”
- “Masterpiece!”
- “What a hottie!”
- “I can't wait for the MODs to come out!”
Yep, the MODs: a practice that was popular on PC in the 90s, when there were already those who enjoyed modifying (hence the term MOD) the appearance of the protagonists of a game. I particularly remember the legend of Nude Raidera MOD that apparently allowed you to play Tomb Raider 2 with Lara completely naked all the time.
The world today
Agree, in 1997 there were no “social media” as we know them todaybut I don't remember anyone ever complaining about the appearance of female characters in video games: for example it was enough to throw a stone into any fighting gamestarting from Street Fighterpassing through Tekken, Soul Calibur. And who remembers the Beach Volleyball mode Dead or Alive?
In the years In the 80s/90s and early 2000s, no one was scandalized by a busty physique or as prominent as that of Eve: indeed, it was probably a source of pride for the producer when he managed to create a character universally considered beautiful and sexy. Then there were the male characters like Dante Of Devil May Crytacky and with theabdomen always on displaypassing through Jin Kazama, Leon Of Resident Evil and so on and so forth: it is undeniable that the prominent, muscular and strong physicality on a masculine level, sexy and curvilinear of the female body, is something that the human race has always been looking for (someone remembers Greek statues physically objectionable? I do not think! ed.).
The answer is in the past
How is it possible that there is controversy over Eve's body? That is, objectively What offends you so much about that character's physicality? If I open any social network today, I am invaded by girls and boys from every country, always in skimpy or scantily clad clothes who sell me this or that product. If I then continue, I discover that many of them are also AI generated by skilled human hands, which model the shapes in such a way that they attract the sight of the spectator (whether the latter man or woman).
If today's world doesn't convince us, the answer is most likely in the past: before we asked ourselves many fewer questions, sometimes making mistakes out of charity, but most of the time with full knowledge of the facts. Why should it be a problem or a “scandal” that the protagonist of a video game (which I want to remind you, is a non-living being and which does not exist in the real world but only behind a screen) is busty and sexy today, when in the past there were plenty of them and no one ever said “A”?
«Tiziano but it was the 90s, boomer!» Yes, I answer: it was the 90s when it all started, and it still continues today, with very recent examples such as Bayonettathe android 2B of Nier Automata and with Cyberpunk 2077 when in the creation of V we can also decide the “dimensions” of everything. Ultimately, listen to those who come from the “past” and who have seen thousands of video games: do it fewer trivial questions and more constructive questionsas “Stellar Blade has Eve who is a sexy bomb but does the gameplay satisfy? It is funny? Do you have any interesting ideas?”.
I could go on forever about the questions and technicalities but the point is that to date, we have a Korean company that is approaching the console market, with its own style, which has always worked in its own country and which offers us an interesting game with dubbing entirely in Italian And sexy protagonist beyond belief: what exactly do you have to complain about?
