The recycling of old cars with the recovery of parts, the regeneration of spare parts and materials is profitable in Mirafiori where Stellantis inaugurated theSUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub.
The economic data coming from the Mirafiori Hub, the first unit of circular economy by Stellantis in Italy, they are decidedly comfortable.
Recycling revenues growing
In 2023, the activity of Stellantis' Circular Economy business unit recorded a 18% increase in global turnover compared to 2022based on the strategy of 4R: Regeneration, Repair, Reuse, Recycling. The full range of sustainable parts has shown a notable increase across all 4Rs, now covering the 15.2% of the requirement customer after-sales.
The expansion of the recycling business is global at group level. In November last year, Stellantis opened the first SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub in Mirafiori, dedicated to the remanufacturing of engines, gearboxes and high-voltage batteries for electric vehicles, as well as the reconditioning and dismantling of vehicles. This Hub aims to industrialize the practices of recovery and reuse sustainable use of components and materials. Currently, the recycling business employs around one hundred workers, many of whom have been transferred from other areas of the plant and when it reaches full operational capacity, the number of workers is expected to increase to 550.
Circular economy Stellantis in Europe
In Europe, in 2023, Stellantis created the SUSTAINera VALORAUTO SAS joint venture with Galloo, offering a complete solution for the take-back and recycling of end-of-life vehicles. In January 2024, the online service was launched www.valorauto.com. Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Not now for a future joint venture for the recycling of electric vehicle batteries at the end of life in Europe and North America.
In BrazilSUSTAINera won the 2023 Automotive Business Award in the ESG category, recognizing the company for its innovation and long-term vision, and its positive impact on the automotive sector and mobility.
2024 and 2030 objectives
In 2024, Stellantis will intensify the use of eco-friendly packagingmaking them mandatory for suppliers in the Enlarged Europe area, in line with the European regulations expected for 2030, extending this policy globally.
Remanufacturing will remain a key pillar of the business unit, with the introduction of new remanufactured products in Enlarged Europe and North America, including a multi-brand offering. B-Partsconsolidated in the European market, will expand globally, starting to operate in the United States to strengthen SUSTAINera's reuse business.
The finalization of the joint venture with Not now in 2024 will strengthen Stellantis' position in the value chain of batteries for electric vehicles, ensuring a sustainable supply of cobalt, nickel and lithium. These plans are aligned with Stellantis' goal of reaching over €2 billion in revenues by 2030as established in the strategic plan Dare Forward 2030contributing to the reduction of net CO2 emissions by 2038.
