Stellantis-Controlled Thermal Resources, the agreement will guarantee 25,000 tons of lithium hydroxide per year
Stellantis And Controlled Thermal Resources today announced the signing of a agreement binding for the supply by Ctr of lithium hydroxide for batteries to be used for the production of electrified vehicles of Stellantis in North America.
The Hell’s Kitchen project of Ctr, in the Californian county of Imperial, will recover lithium from geothermal brines using renewable energy and steam to produce lithium for batteries in an integrated closed-loop process, eliminating the need for brine evaporation ponds, open pit mining and fossil fuel-powered processing processes. L’agreementwith a ten-year duration, foresees that Ctr will supply Stellantis with up to 25,000 tons of lithium hydroxide per year.
At the end of 2021 Stellantis announced a similar supply agreement to support its vehicle production in Europe. As part of the strategic plan Dare Forward 2030, Stellantis announced plans to achieve global annual sales of battery electric cars of five million by 2030, reaching 100% of the vehicle sales mix in Europe and 50% of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in North America with BEVs.
Stellantis it also increased the planned battery capacity from 140 GWh to around 400 GWh. The increase will be supported by five battery manufacturing plants in Europe and North America and by additional supply contracts. Ctr will produce lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate for batteries along with geothermal energy in Imperial County, California, with a field capacity of more than 300,000 tons per year.
