The prosecutor of Rome Giovanni Musarò during the indictment of trial on the alleged misdirection following the death of Stefano Cucchi, beaten and killed in 2009, has solicited 8 requests for sentencing for as many soldiers of the Carabinieri. The most severe punishment has been requested for the general Alessandro Casarsa, at the time of the events commander of the Rome Group. The prosecutor asked for a 7-year sentence for him.

Five and a half years have been asked for Francesco Cavallo at the time of the facts, head of the command of the Rome Carabinieri Group. A five-year sentence was requested for the major Luciano Soligo, former commander of the company Talenti Montesacro. The same penalty was also requested for the carabiniere Luca De Ciani. Four years is the request made by the public prosecutor in respect of Tiziano Testarmata, former commander of the fourth section of the investigative team. For the carabiniere Francesco Di Sano asked for 3 years and 3 months. Three years are the penalty advocated by the prosecutor for Lorenzo Sabatino, then commander of the operational department of the carabinieri in Rome. The sentence of one year and one month was instead solicited for Massimiliano Labriola Colombo, former commander of Tor Sapienza station. For the latter, the prosecutor asked for the recognition of generic extenuating circumstances.

The prosecution also requested theperpetual ban from public offices for Casarsa, Cavallo, De Cianni and Soligo. While for Di Sano, Sabatino and Testarmata the ban for 5 years. The eight carabinieri are accused in various capacities and according to the positions of forgery, aiding and abetting, failure to report and slander.

“There was an activity of stubborn misdirection, which at times I would define obsessive. The facts that we are called to evaluate today are not single isolated conduct but a complex work of misdirection that lasted years”, he recalled during the indictment, which started in the last hearing, the prosecutor Musarò.

The arrest and death of Stefano Cucchi

Stefano Cucchi he died on 22 October 2009 in a room in the Pertini hospital in Rome. He was arrested on October 15, 2009 in via Lemonia in Rome after being caught in possession of 28 grams of hashish. Less than 24 hours later during the hearing of his direct trial, the 31-year-old had obvious injuries and bruises on his eyes. On 17 October – two days after his arrest – he was examined at the Fatebenefratelli hospital: injuries to the legs and face, fracture of the jaw, fractures to the spine, various injuries. He was subsequently admitted to the Sandro Pertini hospital in Rome and died on October 22nd.
