The latest hardware and software survey Steamfrom February 2024, showed a truly surprising result: the Simplified Chinese (the language of mainland China) has overtaken English among the most used languages, placing it in first position.
More precisely, simplified Chinese is used by 32.84% of platform users (+7.62% compared to the previous survey), whileEnglish from 31.12% (-4.05%). The Russian follows very far behind with 9.27% (-0.76%). For those wondering, Italian is used by a paltry 0.58% of users (-0.09%).
A big growth
This is an interesting fact, which shows the increase in the diffusion of Steam in the East, where in the West the situation appears more stagnant. Basically, the huge growth of simplified Chinese has had a negative impact on all other popular languages.
It should be noted that the first three games in the best-selling ranking on Steam for the Chinese territory are all free-to-play (PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, Counter-Strike 2 and Naraka: Bladepoint) and that there is also a title not distributed outside from China: 雀魂麻將(MahjongSoul).
In short, the Chinese market is becoming increasingly important on PC too, despite the fact that Steam is officially limited to the territory.
