Changes to the regulation
Formula 1 began its summer break a few days ago and will continue until the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for 23 to 25 August, but in the meantime the FIA has set to work to intervene on the sports regulations. In this case, the International Federation has modified two articles especially after the controversy that arose over the weekend of last Chinese Grand Prixdating back to April of this year.
Sainz’s accident in qualifying
The first case was the one that saw the protagonist Carlos Sainzwho spun and had a slight impact with the barriers that forced the race direction to display the red flag. Although he remained stationary for a few seconds at the edge of the track, the Spaniard managed to restart the engine, return to the pits and continue the rest of the session once it resumed. A situation that pushed Aston Martin to appeal, even if the British team failed to win it, as the Race Direction highlighted that the drivers were still allowed time to return to the track, without specifying how much. Now, waiting for the return to the track at Zandvoort, Article 39.6 of the sporting regulation states as follows: “Any driver whose car stops in an area other than the pitlane during the qualifying session or sprint qualifying session and receives physical assistance will not be allowed to participate in that session any further“.
The penalties to be served
The second episode, curiously, once again saw Aston Martin and Carlos Sainz at the centre of attention, this time during the Sprint race and with the Ferrari driver the victim of contact with his compatriot Fernando Alonso. Shortly after the maneuver, the Spaniard suffered a 10 second penaltywhich turned out to be ineffective due to the withdraw occurred during the race which did not allow the penalty to be served, neither in that race nor in subsequent sessions. A fact which pushed the Federation to intervene, with the issue now resolved in theArticle 54.3 d): “If one of the penalties is imposed on a rider and he is unable to serve the penalty because he is not classified in the sprint session or in the race in the case of a) [5 secondi di penalità] or) [10 secondi di penalità] or because he withdrew from the sprint session or the race in the case of c) [drive through] from) [10 secondi stop&go]the sports commissioners may impose a grid position penalty on the driver in his next race“.
