There are times when one needs tools or hobbies to escape. When bad news, not to mention terrible news, collapses your head, you have to find something that allows you to return to peace. I say this in relation to the catastrophe suffered by many Spaniards with the floods. People who have not only lost everything, but even family members, some of them still not located. People, whether we like it or not, have felt unprotected by the institutions that govern the country. That to his tremendous personal drama has been added the feeling of abandonment and, why not say it, loss of dignity. Then you see how a country as important as the United States has just emphatically elected a grotesque character like Trump as president. A minor issue compared to the previous one but that ends up filling the bucket with unpleasant things. That’s when you need something to leave your mind at peace.
The resources in my life are the usual ones: reading, music, movies, series or sports. Well, since in some ways it was difficult for me to concentrate, I opted for sports. But I refer to sport as a spectator and then I remembered a small debate I had with Malen, an athlete and tennis player friend at heart. She is an art expert, a brutal Picasso specialist. And one day, after visiting the wonderful Picasso Museum in Barcelona, in which he explained everything to us about the extraordinary painter, we went to eat. And there she explained to me that she did not consider sport as an art, an opinion completely contrary to my thoughts.
With Duplantis, where I had previously seen a man who jumped a lot, I now saw a true work of art.
I agree with you, if due to ignorance or lack of knowledge, you relate sport exclusively to the result, if your only objective is victory. But if your mind allows you to establish the relationship of space-time, the management of strategies, the analysis of the rival, its weaknesses and its strengths and in addition all this is carried out through coordination of the body, for me it is irrefutably sport. It’s an art. And I gave him a clear example. I told him to look at a summary of Iniesta’s best plays, not the goals, his plays, how he evades his rivals by carrying a ball between his feet. Rivals physically prepared at the highest level, who also knew the player perfectly. That’s the best ballet anyone can see. One day I saw a report about Duplantis, the dominator of pole vaulting. He explained how he holds the bar, how his stroke should be, how he supports the pole, how he does the vertical without reducing the energy accumulated by the pole and how he exceeds the desired height in a foreshortening and I saw how ignorant he was. Where before I saw a man who jumped a lot, I started to see a true work of art. I don’t know what you think but for me sport is art and I certainly managed to escape with those images.
