The Senate of Spain approved a motion to recognize Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the new president of Venezuelafollowing the presidential elections on July 28, in which he faced Nicolas Maduro.
After discussing the proposal, the Senate has recognized Urrutia as president of VenezuelaThis decision comes after the Lower House took a similar measure last week.
He Senate Spanish: Spanish, supported by the Popular Party (PP), which has an absolute majority, approved the motion with 149 votes in favor, 102 against and 2 abstentions.
During the session, Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo López was present and Senator Íñigo Fernández García asked for action with dignity in support of the Venezuelan people.
Although these motions are symbolic and do not oblige the Government of the socialist Pedro Sánchez to recognize González Urrutia as president of VenezuelaCongress had already passed a similar resolution on September 11.
Until now, Madrid has requested the publication of the electoral records, but has not officially recognized the new opposition candidate, who arrived in Spain on September 8 seeking asylum.
