The first day begins with a preparatory plenary sessionin which the president of ASALE and director of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), Santiago Muñoz Machado, hands over the presidency of the congress to the director of the Ecuadorian Academy of Language, Susana Cordero de Espinosa, and will be named first vice president of the meeting. Next, there will be a visit to the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Academy of Language, host of the congress.
Subsequently, the first internal plenary session takes place, which will be chaired by Santiago Muñoz Machado, who will announce the management report during the period between congresses (2020-2024) and the ASALE action program for the four-year period 2025-2028. Next, it will be the turn of the reports related to different pan-Hispanic projects in progress.
The RAE academic Dolores Corbella will be in charge of presenting the report corresponding to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DLE), while the president of ASALE will do the same with the report from the Historical Dictionary of the Spanish Language (DHLE), and Guillermo Sotodirector of the Chilean Academy of Language, and Francisco Javier Pérezgeneral secretary of ASALE, will offer information about the Pan-Hispanic Phraseological Dictionary (DFP).
Reports relating to the second edition of the Phonetics and phonology of the ‘New grammar of the Spanish language’ (NGLE), which will be read on behalf of the RAE academic José Manuel Blecua; that of the second edition project of the ‘Dictionary of Americanisms’ (DA), which will be presented by Francisco Javier Pérez; that of the project ‘Pan-Hispanic dictionary of gastronomy’ (DPG), by the president of the Peruvian Academy of Language, Eduardo Hopkins, and the reports corresponding to the Inter-Academic Publications Commission of the ASALE and the School of Hispanic Lexicography (ELH), which will be in charge, respectively, of the director from the Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language, José Luis Vega, and from the RAE academic Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez.
Finally, the solemn inaugural session, of a public nature, in which José María Vázquez García-Peñuela, rector of the International University of La Rioja (UNIR), will participate, together with Santiago Muñoz Machado and Susana Cordero de Espinosa; Andrés Allamand, Ibero-American Secretary General (via telematics); Santiago Herrero, director of Cultural and Scientific Relations of the AECID, and Enrique Vargas Flores, coordinator of the Cultural Space for Ibero-America of the Ibero-American General Secretariat.
At the XVII ASALE Congress, delegates from the twenty-three academies from around the world will meet until November 13 in Quito (Ecuador), who share the responsibility of maintaining unity and the good use of Spanish, the common heritage of almost 600 million people.
